In the Shadow of Prosperity
In contemporary China, the rise of consumer ideology has been remarkable. Yet the rapid economic growth, which has given the country enormous wealth, has at the same time vastly divided the country’s rich and poor. A similar case occurred in Japan from the mid-1950s through the early-1970s. During that period Japan gained advanced technology, abundant labor and wealth. However behind the prosperity, major cities became congested, the provinces were depopulated and the country faced increased pollution due to rapid industrial growth. Read more...
